Confusion

ENGLISH ONLY MENUS PUZZLE LOCALS, FOREIGNERS IN BULGARIAN SEA RESORTS
Restaurant menus written only in English have caused some trouble for Bulgarians across the country's Black Sea resorts, its Commission for Consumer Protection has alarmed.
Most tourists visiting the largest Bulgarian sea resorts are foreigners, but the "globalization" of the menus has apparently gone too far. Besides menus being incomprehensible for many Bulgarians, the Commission for Consumer Protection has alarmed that hotels have been illegally boosting their number of stars in order to attract more tourists.
Consumer protection teams are also checking out the quality of the alcohol sold in some of the resorts, the Dnevnik daily reports.
As for the menus, Bulgarians may not be the only ones facing a language barrier during the summer tourist season. A lot of the restaurants translate their menus too carelessly, which often results in absurd dish "titles".
"A constipated old man from Bansko" is an example of the Bulgarian "restaurant" English. "Bansko's old man" is a traditional delicacy in the country's southwestern ski resort of Bansko – and constipated is a homonym for "slightly roasted" in Bulgarian. The translator has obviously confused the dictionary entries.
"Cheese under cover" is the mysterious name received for a traditional cheese dish served under a lid.
"Sponges with forgeries" is how spiced mushrooms have been translated in a Bulgarian restaurant. One and the same word is used for "mushroom" and "sponge" in Bulgarian.

Sunny Beach in the PM's words...

BULGARIAN PM ROASTS POPULAR SEA RESORT'S 'CHEAPNESS'
Sunny Beach, Bulgaria's largest sea resort, looks too cheap, the country's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has stated, comparing it to a "chicken coop".
"Sunny Beach should not look like a chicken coop – with panties and socks being sold all over the place. This is not a resort and this does not look like Sunny Beach," the Prime Minister said Saturday.
Borisov stated that the potential solution of the conflict between the resort's hotel owners and the company managing Sunny Beach depends on whether "panties and pantyhoses" are removed from its streets.
On Tuesday, some 500 hotel and restaurant owners, taxi drivers and salespeople rallied in Sunny Beach against regulations set by the company managing it.
The protesters demanded the immediate resignations of the management of the shareholder company owning the resort, disgruntled over what they claim are illegitimate fees for services and access to local infrastructure.
The protest was triggered by the increased fees imposed by the management for access to the eastern area of the resort.
Hotel owners also claimed they pay double fees for the construction of temporary trade facilities – to both the municipality of the town of Nessebar and the company managing Sunny Beach.

Suicide News !!

BRIT TOURIST THREATENS TO KILL HIMSELF IN BULGARIA
A British tourist residing in the Bulgarian Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach has threatened he would kill himself, local police authorities revealed Saturday.
A 47-year-old British citizen, who arrived in the Balkan country on June 3 as a part of an organized tourist group,  had a temporary psychiatric meltdown late on Friday and threatened he would commit suicide while standing on his hotel room's balcony, news.ibox.bg reports.
The news report does not mention whether the Brit's condition has improved or not.

This was absolutely hilarious, an inspired piece of 'guerilla art'. However I can see how it upsets the Russians, but if you inflict ghastly 'socialist realist' art on subject peoples it's not totally surprising when some of them baulk !.

Sensible Move

BULGARIA MAY PROMPT EU ANTI-CORRUPTION BOARD - GERMAN MP
Bulgaria, Greece and Romania may prompt the EU to enforce a long-term reform program aimed at dealing with corruption and dubious political practices, according to Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, a German MEP.
Chatzimarkakis, a German liberal MEP of Greek descent, told EurActiv that the European Commission considers a plan to directly manage regional funds in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania as the countries' administrations are currently incapable of doing so themselves.
"The question of absorption of EU money is a big issue for the commissioner responsible for cohesion funds. And he sees three countries that are not able to absorb EU funding in an appropriate manner. This affects in a special manner Bulgaria and Romania, but also Greece, which has fallen even behind Bulgaria and Romania," the German MEP stated.
However, the MEP does not believe implementing the measure would be an easy task.
"All the respective countries have the problem of being very proud, saying 'this cuts our sovereignty', although this is just not the case, of course. Those are just programmes that will still be presented by the member states, not by civil servants," he said.

Uncles View: If you cannot rely upon your own people to run EU money then having the EU run it itself is eminently sensible.
