Bulgaria lowest construction costs in Europe
Building construction in Bulgaria is the cheapest in Europe, according to a comparative analysis of the EC Harris company, specializing in construction consulting.
The Bulgarian Trud (Labor) daily writes Saturday, citing the analysis, that expenses for construction in Bulgaria are anywhere between 38% and 66% from those in Southeastern UK, which was used as basis.
The study takes into account the price of construction material and labor expenses. Values in Bulgaria vary since buildings are divided in 44 categories, such as offices, stores, logistics facilities, hotels, residencies etc.
Globally, Bulgaria is also among the countries with the cheapest construction in the world. From all 56 countries, subject to the study, only some African ones such as Ghana, Morocco, and Tunisia, and some Asian – China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam, have expenses lower than the ones in Bulgaria.
The top three by the lowest construction cost are Taiwan, India and Shri Lanka where one building can end up being 4 times cheaper than one in Southeastern UK.
Labor in the sector is the cheapest in Pakistan and India.
Construction is the most expensive in Switzerland.
Cost depends a lot on the prices of steel, copper, and oil.
Experts say the fact Bulgaria is in the bottom in the Old Continent by construction cost does not have such importance for investors as qualified labor and good infrastructure.
Investments in shopping malls depend on the purchasing power of the population while for office buildings the most important factors are the overall state of the economy and the ratio between supply and demand.

Spate of Burglaries at Lighthouse and Blacksearama Golf Courses
In the past week or so I can report that over half a dozen break-ins have taken place at two of Topola's three golf courses. Both houses and apartments have been affected and the losses have been cash, laptops and other small valuables. It is obvious that a gang are targeting the area. Both courses have a large perimeter and its difficult to guard, but I would guess that the security companies have been given a rollocking.

The total figures mask the 'devil in the detail'.Bulgaria is fast becoming a regional rather than European holiday destination. The growth areas are all former Soviet bloc. There have been modest increases in German figures but I think many of these are from the former East Germany.
The big spending tourists are few now. It's bad news for Bulgaria.

Power Cuts
Just had an hour and a half power cut. This is not unusual especially in the summer when they do maintenance.Unfortunately Bulgaria's national grid is creaking, the demands on it especially in the tourist season, and in winter for heating means it occasionally cannot cope.In the UK when a power station goes off-line other stations provide the power not here.Similarly during thunderstorms they switch the power off which is to stop your electrical goods get fried.

Saturday Morning Update
Good Morning Readers,
Just a couple of bits and pieces to keep you up to date how the blog is progressing.A few days ago we passed through the 1000 unique UK visitors threshold and yesterday we had 178 page views, which is a record for the blog. In total over 6000 individuals have visited Uncle Bulgaria's site so far. There has not been a day in the past week when less than 100 pages were being read.
I have posted alot of articles recently referring people to other sites, without writing any comments myself. I shall be rectifying this over the weekend, so keep an eye out for additional text on recent posts.
Again thanks for all the support and, as usual, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

This is actually Bulgarians buying for between 40-50,000 Euro's typically, and whilst it represents a good sign it does little for the wider Bulgarian property malaise which is based upon the collapse of inward foreign investment. The collapse is about the lack of available credit which in turn is based upon falling property prices in the West and the banks unwillingness to lend to all but the most secure bets. Until this changes the situation is likely to flat-line.

Scientology is pure rubbish it's founder the sci-fi writer L.Ron Hubbard once said that you can make money writing books by the page but if you wanted to make serious money you had to invent your own religion. That says it all !.
Unfortunately Scientology is now a powerful cult which uses brainwashing techniques on its members. It's not funny or amusing anymore.

Bulgaria Update
I thought that after posting lots of stuff on the UK riots, I would start talking about Bulgaria again. The most interesting recent news has been that the Bulgarian state has apparently been talking about a second oil refinery that doesn't involve Lukoil but that it has as of yet come to nothing. This is so timely and I will keep monitoring it for readers.Monopolies rarely benefit the consumer.
Today in Bulgaria it has been rain of biblical proportions, and only stopped in late afternoon. It is however the first rain in ages and was much needed.
The season is at peak now but still a very poor one, no sign of the tourists outside of the beach and the all inclusive hotels.

No shame, no limits: Has the behaviour of the mob destroyed the idea of British civility for ever? - Crime, UK - The Independent
The article is very good.I think the point about British culture formerly knowing where the boundaries were and everybody implicitly understanding is well made. When people don't know the rules they have to be enforced as they are in the US a young state where no one automatically knew the rules.
It still begs the question as to how you inculcate core British values in a mass media age ?.Any ideas out there ?.

UK Riots-The Aftermath
Thankfully last night passed off comparatively quietly, with the notable exception of the 'hit and run' deaths of three guys in Birmingham. The events in Manchester and other cities were copycat looting and it appears that the tsunami has passed over us.
However, now we must begin to analyse why the riots occurred.
Firstly ,aside from the initial disorders in Tottenham, they had nothing to do with the death of Mark Duggan. Most of the rioters were teenagers and opportunists.
What I think occurred is the result of a counter culture that has grown up amongst an under-class of teenagers, that rejects contemporary society in favour of a micro society that exists on the council estates which values selfishness, narcissism and nihilism. For them life is dog eat dog, and this justifies violence, theft and general hatred to keep above water.
It is no wonder then that the main things looted were trainers, mobile phones, plasma TV's and bling. These are the signs of social acceptability in their world. It is what the mass media tells them they should have, and if they cannot get them by fair means foul one's are perfectly acceptable.
They reject all conventional notions of authority or of achievement and live in an underworld that has its own values.
How has this happened you may ask ?.
The answer goes back (as with many things) to 1979 and the election of Thatcher. She said that 'There is no such thing as society, only individual and families'. What this means is that the state withdraws and basically lets people get on with it.The moral example of the state (and its safety net) was taken away. Coupled with the decline of established institutions, such as the church, the family and virtually everything else in civil society, the result is feral children.
The violence of the last few days is clearly a result of social policy, things like this happen for a reason. The reason is the abdication of responsibility and, until we resurrect notions of society we will never get to grip with issues like this.
There were positive signs though, I liked the way a Twitter campaign brought out scores of people to clean up Clapham High Street. This is what community engagement should be about. However, I reiterate if the state gives up (as it has in the last 30 years) then you get disenfranchised, dysfunctional people and you get disorder crime and an unhappy population.
Solutions ?, difficult to see.Probably intensive youth work, counselling, training, compulsory work schemes. For the rioter offenders exemplary sentences (though since the prisons are full maybe transportation somewhere !!!).
One must as usual touch on abysmal parenting skills as a key source of the problem especially around single parent families and poor role models.Additionally it is likely that low aspirations are endemic with low opportunities its dire partner.
