About an hour ago, at 4pm EET, a freighter (fully laden) from Balchik harbour encountered difficulties and sank. All crew were rescued. As yet the cause of the disaster is unclear, but overloading or cargo movement cannot be ruled out. More as it happens...
It is now confirmed it is a Russian registered ship the 'Elga 1' .Other sources suggest water leaked in via the propeller. The ship was loaded with coal heading to a Russian port. Sea conditions at the time were unremarkable. The ship was built in 1991.
The ship is laying in a shipping lane so will have to be salvaged, not to mention the hundreds of tonnes of coal on board.
Ironically this took place on St. Nicholas Day, the patron saint of sailors !.
