BTV News Last Night

Private TV Channel BTV aired again, a 4 year old documentary related to dodgy church land sales in the Rogachevo/Obrochishte area.Land was sold at a pittance and then re-sold for 200,000 Euro's.Guess what ?; the Limo-loving Bishop of Varna was involved in that too.Obviously BTV Novinite senses blood here as they devoted half the evening news to the programme.Something seems really rotten at the heart of the Varna Bishopric !. And to think that this individual is a serious candidate to replace Patriarch Maxim, the Head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

Uncle Bulgaria Blog Update

Good Morning Readers, from a -2C Obrochishte village.Nice pretty frost and feeling very crisp outside.

Last night, whilst slaving over a hot laptop, I changed the design of the blogsite as an experiment.I think it looks pretty good, but any feedback would be appreciated.

One interesting note from yesterday was that there were 398 page views virtually all from the USA.Obviously there is higher internet penetration in the States than anywhere else, but I think it is just some search engine trolling through.Still nice to get the stats up.

I am working with ex-pats here to stage a ceremony at the Crimean War Memorial in Varna, next Armistice Day, it is a long way off but I will keep readers posted as we would like a large turnout.

GOBG PROPERTY WEBSITE

Good Morning readers from a cold and overcast Bulgaria, it will be barely above freezing here today so I think I will making a sortie to Elbarr Bar in Rogachevo, which has the advantage of being warm and there will be plenty of people to chat to.Winter here is very quiet and there is not a lot to do, so it is important to give structure to your life with hobbies and interests.I have quite a busy life, but I don't envy the people who are retired out here in the winter months.

On another note please take a look at my property website by clicking on the post heading. The Bulgarian property market now offers great value for money and there are great bargains to be had.

Fascinating

Who is the 'Tour De Force' behind Boyko Brisov?

Letters to the Editor
After Bulgaria's Presidential and Mayoral elections Boyko Borisov and his GERB government / political party have consolidated their power over Bulgaria, with a stranglehold grip and now have a mandate to essentially do what they like for the next two years.
At the GERB press conference that followed (with speeches by Borisvo and his fellow partners), Borisov launched into a vitriolic attack on the last Socialist PM, his party and the communists that ruled Bulgaria for forty five years, blaming all the present woes of the country on all of them. What Borisvo failed to admit was that he and most of the political parties and their prominent members, owe their existence and everything to the situation that the communists left Bulgaria in after 1989, when the plunder and pillage of the countries assets started in earnest.
There are many examples of the systematic distribution of the state property that were planned before 1989, but did not appear until that date when most companies where formed and lots of people became very wealthy over night. Don't forget that in 1989 the total worth of Bulgarian state assets were valued at 30 billion US dollars and only 10% of that figure has ever been recouped
Also, 1989 was the start of a new era for the ex Soviet countries when they at last embraced democracy, but for Bulgaria and Russia it was the beginning of the end for absolute state control and the signal for the distribution of wealth to the people close to the old powers and their hangers on. These people now control their countries through crime, corruption, politics, judiciary and business cartels.
Having the right connections in any walk of life is important for a person's advancement and looking back over Borisov's rapid climb to his present position, is it blatantly obvious that he had lots. His first stroke of luck was having his father Metodi working in the Ministry of Interior (the forerunner of the present MOI), as an official. This gave the young ambitious Borisov a great start in life and a foothold on the ladder for what lay ahead. But, the biggest connection was yet to come!
In 1988 Borisov and his wife swapped partners with Tsvetelina Borislavova and her husband and this is when Borisov's climb accelerated even beyond his own expectations and answers lots of the questions about his intelligence and ability with things today.
Tsvetelina Borislavova is very smart and has not become Bulgaria's richest women by coincidence, without lots of useful connections from the past. Her father was in the former intelligence service and was posted to various countries via the Bulgarian embassies there. Her former husband's (and Boyko's friend and swapping partner) father was a member of the Bulgarian Politburo and also an ambassador, so everything was in place for things to happen when the distribution of Bulgarian wealth started.
Ipon-1, the vehicle for Borisov's advancement was founded in 1989, with Tsvetelina Borislavova and him as the two partners. Quickly, Todor Zhivkov (who was under house arrest) along with Ex King Simeon 11 where clients of the company, with Borisvo being their personal body guard. In 2001-05 Borisov rose to the rank of a general and became Chief Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior under the ex King's patronage.
In 2005 Borisov became mayor of Sofia and in 2006 GERB was formed as a political party and the rest is history.
This for me answers a lot of questions how a person of Borisov's intelligence could do all the things he has achieved, without someone else being the guiding force, by using their connections and expertise to put him where he is today.
They say that behind every successful man there's a woman.......
Keith Gregory

I doubt whether this letter was written by the person with the name attached in the Novinite.com, but it cuts right to the heart of the problem.

When a Nation commits suicide.

To the astonishment of just about everybody the Greek Prime Minister, George Papandreou has announced a referendum on the Greek Bailout. This is akin to the passengers on the Titanic voting on whether to use the lifeboats or not.

The rationale behind this beggars belief.Without more EU money (basically read German and French money) Greece will default on its debts and slide unceremoniously out of the Eurozone.Aside from the obvious question of how they will re-introduce the Drachma overnight, the resulting financial meltdown will implode the Greek economy and possibly take the Italian one with it (Italy's finances are in a parlous position and its parliament won't make the necessary reforms).

The Greeks naturally don't like the cuts and it's opposition party is in denial, so the situation regarding public opinion is dire. The Greek people feel lied to, and it is a fact that Greek entry into the Euro was based upon the Greek government telling the EU a pack of lies regarding it's financial position.

The Greek people will have to hold their politicians accountable for this catastrophy, but for the moment silly referendums is the last card of a desperate Prime Minister.

Stormy Weather

Monday and Tuesday were horrendous here weather wise. There was torrential rain and strong winds.I was without power from 8.30 at night till 1pm the next day.I think a lot of houses were damaged and my house had a small water leak. The weather is now sunny and warm, but it was certainly weird weather for this time of year. There was even snow in some areas.

On another note I have now closed the 'Where will you stay in Bulgaria this year ?' poll which, unsurprisingly, had Sunny Beach as the clear winner.I am currently deciding on the next poll topic, so if you have any ideas let me know.

Ex-Pat Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) for Dobrich Region

I am interesting in co-sponsoring an NGO for the Dobrich region.First question you will ask is 'What is an NGO' ?.The answer is that it is an organisation that represents the interests of a particular group, for example an environmental or human rights group. An NGO has a statutory right to be consulted on matters within it's remit by national and local government..

For this reason an organisation to represent the ex-patriot community to central and local government could be useful (for instance problems with bureaucracy regulations etc).

If you live in the region and are interested let me know.

Uncle's Comment : Ethnic tensions are never far below the surface in Bulgaria, although governments in the post communist period have preached tolerance. However the Gypsy issue is a very serious one in Bulgaria whether they are criminal because they are socially marginalised or vice versa, it is a fact that they are regarded with pretty much contempt by the 'Bulgarian' host population. Now everyone from the Bikers to football hooligans are getting involved.Potentially it could be serious although the authorities appear to be keeping it under control.

Blog News

Well viewers, the bunting is out in Uncle Bulgaria's office this afternoon (well it would be if we had any), as a perusal of google has revealed that we really are the premier English language Blog for news and views in Bulgaria. If you google 'Blog Bulgaria' we are at position 15, but if you take away technical blogs, and those that are not in fact in English, we are in first place.Similarly if the search is 'British blog Bulgaria' we are number one (with a little help from our chums at Anglo Info, but also featuring in our own right on the first and second pages).

New Monument to the British Crimean War Dead

At the weekend a monument was unveiled in Devnya, near Varna, to the 700 British soldiers who died of Cholera whilst in transit to the Crimea in 1854.

Its a nice gesture but a little bit odd as there is no mention of the 3000 French soldiers who also died.Secondly the soldiers were fighting on the Turkish side against the Russians (Bulgaria's eventual liberators) and the Russian defeat set back Bulgarian independence for twenty years.

Still, a nice touch.

Another PR disaster

The Russian media are featuring heavily the 700 Russians stuck at airports here due to the 3.5 million allegedly owed by Alma Tours to Bulgaria Air. The Russians are using words like 'Bulgarian sloppiness' and commenting that British or German tourists would not have been treated this way.

True some hoteliers in Sunny Beach have put them up for free, or invited them back here next year for free holidays, but the impact of this mess cannot be under estimated. There is massive over capacity in the Hotel industry and, despite what the trade bodies say, this season has not been good.

If next year Russian bookings are significantly down the Bulgarian Tour industry will have only itself to blame.

or here for internet viewers:

http://www.veetle.com/index.php/channel/view#4e36fc0e6e824

Whoops 1-1 now..slippery slope I am afraid !.

Talking of slippery slopes, the channel appears to have switched to porno for half time so the fainthearted should wait 15 minutes. Its obviously a Bulsat viewer having a few dozen lagers !.

2-1 to the Swiss now that's what the half time porn did to the team !

New Tourist Info Centres

MUNICIPALITY TO INTERSPERSE SOFIA WITH TOURIST INFO CENTERS
Sofia Municipality is going to open at least five more Tourist Information Centers, in addition to the only existing one, according to Deputy Sofia Mayor Irina Savina.
The Tourist Information Center in Sofia was opened in January 2010; it is located at the Sofia University metro station.
Savina announced Saturday, however, as cited by BTA, that similar tourist and cultural information offices will be opened at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of Sofia International Airport, the Central Railway Station, the Central Bus Station, and the National Palace of Culture.
The first two of the new tourist info offices of Sofia Municipality – the ones at Sofia Airport – are to be opened in October 2011 in cooperation with the airport administration. The new Tourist Information Centers will be smaller than the existing one.

Time Flies

I cannot believe how quickly summer has passed by.Already my Bulgarian colleague is asking me when I will drain the pool down, and all the talk is about getting wood for the winter. For the past few weeks tonnes of wood has been appearing on the roadsides and the sound of chainsaws is familiar.

The summer season has been very disappointing for most people here and the streets are not busy with people.I fear that the winter will be very hard for people as they will not have much money.

The village I am in is totally reliant on the tourist industry and the Albena resort in particular. The season will wind down from the middle of this month and did not really start till June so the window of opportunity to make money is pretty narrow.Naturally this puts pressure to find work elsewhere and that effectively means working in the ski resorts or working abroad.Germany is the favourite destination currently but Spain was attractive too, but even there there is 15-20% unemployment amid bleak austerity. The next few months are not going to be a good time.
