Entertainment news
It has been announced that Sting will play in Sofia in June accompanied by a symphony orchestra he has previously played in Sofia and Nessabar.Shakira has announced some eastern european dates but, as yet, none in Bulgaria.I will keep an eye out for further announcements.

Cost of a weeks shopping in Bulgaria
I have mentioned before that it is comparatively cheap to live in Bulgaria.Here as an illustration is my shopping extravaganza this morning at Penny Market in Balchik :

I placed this link on as soon as I saw it.However I checked in detail this morning and, when you put it your holiday preferences, it just draws a blank.This is supposed to be a new promotion.Who do they employ at Balkan Holidays ?, monkeys ?. There is no point in me placing information like this on the blog when it turns out to be a red herring.I am not impressed.

West Ham to win Olympic stadium bid
Yes folks it looks as if West Ham have finally won something !.The Olympics Committee have recommended to the Mayor of London that West Ham's bid be preferred over that of Spurs.
Whilst I am personally pleased, there are a number of worrying questions.Firstly watching football with an athletics track between the spectator and the game is bound not to be a great experience, especially compared to the intimacy of the Boleyn Ground.Someone who works at West Ham has already expressed concerns about parking and access, but Green Street is pretty awful for that too.
A more serious concern is financial, after Sunday's dire performance against Birmingham, West Ham are in deep crap in the relegation zone.If they get relegated they will immediately lose 30-40 million pounds in TV rights, followed by associated sponsorship and merchandising.How on earth can they afford it ?.
As a very wise owl said to me today, 40 million quid exactly matches the 40 million pound loan Newham Council are lending Gold and Sullivan at West Ham.That ,as they say in East London, will be 'See ya later money'.

February 14th - A Bulgarian take on Valentines Day
Most other places in the world it is the commercial celebration of a non existent Catholic saint called St. Valentine.However in Bulgaria it is also St. Trifons Day, which is the orthodox saint for wine.This is also referred to as 'men's day'. This is particularly prevalent in the villages and basically consists of guys going into the countryside and eating and drinking.I am invited on Monday so will give you a full report, but I have to make sure I spoil my girlfriend with compliments before we disappear off !.

Many of you will have read about the Bulgarian property boom and latterly decline.It's true to say that the 'gold rush' of 2004-2007 brought out the worst in a lot of people. My comparison is this ; a few years ago lawyers were doing very well so everyone was a lawyer, then the property market was doing very well, so everyone was an estate agent or a builder.In Bulgaria, if astronauts were doing well every Bulgarian would try and be an astronaut !.
As a consequence a lot of people got their fingers burnt, primarily when the international property market collapsed, or they were cheated by a dodgy builder or agent.
It is now 2011 however, and there is light at the end of the tunnel.The agents and builders left around after this will be those who were not 'fly by nights' and far more able to give proper service.

Uncle Bulgaria Blog Update
I am very pleased that our friends at www.gooverseas.com have included this site in their top 5 Bulgarian blogs and, in the time honoured principle of 'you scratch my back and i'll scratch yours', they get a mention in our illustrious columns too.On another note we had over 1000 page views in the last rolling month which is pretty good stuff, particularly bearing in mind that people looking for information on Bulgaria normally do it in the spring before they come here for the good weather, or before they come here property inspecting, which also is normally in the spring.Consequently to get this level of interest in yours truly's blog in the month of February is pretty good.
I hope people are enjoying the revamped blog and the dramatically increased output of news/opinion. I was also asked by one reader to help his child with their school project on Bulgaria and was happy to oblige.I just hope they got a good grade !.

I have just been checking through the blog stats and was bemused to find that the words 'hooker' and 'prostitute' feature in 3 out of 10 of the top search phrases.Uncle Bulgaria has written about Bulgaria's prostitution problem in the past, hence why the site is being picked up on these searches.However I would remind readers that, whilst I have a ribald sense of humour, I am definitely not able to tell sex tourists where they can 'phone a friend' !.

Weather Update
The worst cyclone in recorded memory hits the seemingly cursed state of Queensland, enormous snow storms are visited upon the US Eastern seaboard, and there are floods in Saudi Arabia.Conclusive proof most would think that climate change is now a stark reality.
Here in Bulgaria we are used to short sharp winters beginning at Christmas and ending in early March.Salient features of this winter include serious amounts of snow leading to disruption of road, rail and air links.However this winter has been very mild with only a few days of snow.There is snow on the ground now, but it fell days ago, the temperatures are barely below freezing in the day and circa minus 6 at night, but we have plenty of sunshine.This weather is very moderate.I don't know the science behind this but it sure beats freezing your butt off at -15 and more !.

Hot off the presses is our house of the month.It's a high quality home of 129m2 with two bedrooms and the possibility of an additional bedroom.There are two bathroom/WC's, one en suite.On the ground floor there is a through lounge and fitted kitchen as well as a store room.There is a large balcony as well.
Externally there is a patio and a large swimming pool and gardens shared with another house within this gated complex.There is a 2 metre stone wall around the site and off street parking for each house.
The three international golf courses are 2km away and Balchik 4km.The village in which it is situated has shops and a bar/restaurant.Varna airport is 45 minutes away.This is great value at only 70,000 Euros.
