Uncle's Comment: Volen Siderov is playing this debate like a fiddle, trying to seize the Bulgarian Presidency on a wave of backlash against the events in Kustinitsa.Unluckily for him most Bulgarians are not stupid enough to vote for him, even though the political class is corrupt and morally bankrupt.

Uncles' Comment: The upshot of this is that there is an election on October 23rd, which will see a boost in the votes for the extreme right wing Ataka party and the Gypsy/Turkish DPS.Luckily these elections are only for the presidency and Councils/Mayor's.The Presidency is pretty much a race between the governing GERB party, the Socialists and a moderate Independent. If it were for parliament it could have been a recipe for chaos.

Uncle's Comment : Ethnic tensions are never far below the surface in Bulgaria, although governments in the post communist period have preached tolerance. However the Gypsy issue is a very serious one in Bulgaria whether they are criminal because they are socially marginalised or vice versa, it is a fact that they are regarded with pretty much contempt by the 'Bulgarian' host population. Now everyone from the Bikers to football hooligans are getting involved.Potentially it could be serious although the authorities appear to be keeping it under control.

My House of the Month only 5450 Euro's !

Solid rural house ideal to suit a big family!
This appealing two-storey house is situated at the picturesque village only 40 min away from the historic town of Veliko Tarnovo. The village is big and very well developed with all amenities – school, kindergarden, shops, ironmongery, pubs, cultural club, English community etc. Nearest airport on 230 km.
The house provides a total living area of 120 sq. m. and briefly comprises of:
First floor-a corridor, kitchen and two good-size rooms with wooden ceilings, concrete and dust floors and washed walls. There is also fireplace and additional cellar to the kitchen plus back enter toward garden and farm buildings, which are destined for pigs, ships and birds. The property is part renovated.
Second floor: an external concrete staircase leads to a wide corridor and three bedrooms. The rooms upstairs are presented in good-condition with whitewashed and wallpaper walls, wooden floors and ceilings. On the whole the house is well-maintained and ready to live in-it only needs some superficial renovation and adapting to the new owner’s taste.
The garden offers approx. 1800 sq.m. with vineyard and fruit trees with many farm buildings.

For more pictures click the post heading and look for offer VT1 under Veliko Turnovo - Houses in the property section.

Your Questions about Bulgaria

Periodically I put a post here that basically invites anyone with questions about living in Bulgaria or life in general, to post them on the Blog.It may be that you are considering re-locating here or simply visiting, if I, or one of the readers, can help we shall try and assist you

Blog News

Well viewers, the bunting is out in Uncle Bulgaria's office this afternoon (well it would be if we had any), as a perusal of google has revealed that we really are the premier English language Blog for news and views in Bulgaria. If you google 'Blog Bulgaria' we are at position 15, but if you take away technical blogs, and those that are not in fact in English, we are in first place.Similarly if the search is 'British blog Bulgaria' we are number one (with a little help from our chums at Anglo Info, but also featuring in our own right on the first and second pages).

As Del Boy would say 'Lovely jubbly' !.

New Monument to the British Crimean War Dead

At the weekend a monument was unveiled in Devnya, near Varna, to the 700 British soldiers who died of Cholera whilst in transit to the Crimea in 1854.

Its a nice gesture but a little bit odd as there is no mention of the 3000 French soldiers who also died.Secondly the soldiers were fighting on the Turkish side against the Russians (Bulgaria's eventual liberators) and the Russian defeat set back Bulgarian independence for twenty years.

Still, a nice touch.

Advertising on Uncle Bulgaria's Blog

Hi again readers,

We are currently organising an advertising campaign, on both the blogsite and the commercial site: www.gobg.co.uk (which is linked in to the post header). The visitor stats for the blogsite are currently 20 new, unique, visitors every day (and, for today, record page views of 130 pages plus). For 30 Euro's a month you can be on page one of the blog and have a mention in the property website too.

Remember, this is a location and topic specific blog, and, possibly the leading English language blog-site in Bulgaria. I am only taking the first five offers, so book early to avoid disappointment. Each booking is for three months.

E mail me on info@gobg.co.uk or skype darrin2433

Another PR disaster

The Russian media are featuring heavily the 700 Russians stuck at airports here due to the 3.5 million allegedly owed by Alma Tours to Bulgaria Air. The Russians are using words like 'Bulgarian sloppiness' and commenting that British or German tourists would not have been treated this way.

True some hoteliers in Sunny Beach have put them up for free, or invited them back here next year for free holidays, but the impact of this mess cannot be under estimated. There is massive over capacity in the Hotel industry and, despite what the trade bodies say, this season has not been good.

If next year Russian bookings are significantly down the Bulgarian Tour industry will have only itself to blame.

Restaurant Tempo, Veliko Turnovo

I had two excellent meals at this restaurant yesterday and can thoroughly recommend it.Lunch was a delicious Calzone pizza washed down with a bottle of Heineken, the bill was 9.10lv.

In the evening I had a chicken breast stuffed with cheese and cream with a side salad plus a garlic parlenka (flat bread) and a 0.5L carafe of white wine..12.50lv.The waitress was attentive and friendly and I had a window seat. The decor is very tasteful.Great Value 8/10.

Tempo is located in the same complex as the Etap bus station and the Hotel Etar near to the main street.

New Tourist Info Centres

MUNICIPALITY TO INTERSPERSE SOFIA WITH TOURIST INFO CENTERS
Sofia Municipality is going to open at least five more Tourist Information Centers, in addition to the only existing one, according to Deputy Sofia Mayor Irina Savina.
The Tourist Information Center in Sofia was opened in January 2010; it is located at the Sofia University metro station.
Savina announced Saturday, however, as cited by BTA, that similar tourist and cultural information offices will be opened at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of Sofia International Airport, the Central Railway Station, the Central Bus Station, and the National Palace of Culture.
The first two of the new tourist info offices of Sofia Municipality – the ones at Sofia Airport – are to be opened in October 2011 in cooperation with the airport administration. The new Tourist Information Centers will be smaller than the existing one.

Time Flies

I cannot believe how quickly summer has passed by.Already my Bulgarian colleague is asking me when I will drain the pool down, and all the talk is about getting wood for the winter. For the past few weeks tonnes of wood has been appearing on the roadsides and the sound of chainsaws is familiar.

The summer season has been very disappointing for most people here and the streets are not busy with people.I fear that the winter will be very hard for people as they will not have much money.

The village I am in is totally reliant on the tourist industry and the Albena resort in particular. The season will wind down from the middle of this month and did not really start till June so the window of opportunity to make money is pretty narrow.Naturally this puts pressure to find work elsewhere and that effectively means working in the ski resorts or working abroad.Germany is the favourite destination currently but Spain was attractive too, but even there there is 15-20% unemployment amid bleak austerity. The next few months are not going to be a good time.
