Rouble rise prompts hopes that Russian economic crisis is easing | Business | The Guardian:

Uncle's Comment: The rapid drop in the value of the rouble will have a detrimental effect on the Bulgarian property market in that Russians are the biggest investors at the minute. However in the context of the property market, it may serve to drive prices further down and make them more attractive to other investors. The failure of the South Stream pipeline has already signalled a re-orientation of Russo-Bulgarian relations.

Review of the week in Bulgaria

Well it has been an eventful week in Bulgaria, and in Balchik.

Firstly, more shennanigans in parliament: the budget was passed, but not before there were rumbles about the News in Turkish on BNT.

Then there was the resignation of Slavi Binev as Chairman of the Culture and Media Committee...and then there was the pipeline, always the pipeline, for South Stream.

Then our coal boat sank in Balchik..and then, as usual, it got colder and colder.

And it appears the cheapest petrol in Bulgaria is in Stara Zagora, at 2.10lv a litre.

And all of this, and more, was covered on this blog !.Why not follow or like on twitter/facebook or even click some adds , it only takes a moment and your arm wont fall off !.

Breaking News: Freighter sinks 1km from Balchik - Exclusive: On day of Patron Saint of Sailors

About an hour ago, at 4pm EET, a freighter (fully laden) from Balchik harbour encountered difficulties and sank. All crew were rescued. As yet the cause of the disaster is unclear, but overloading or cargo movement cannot be ruled out. More as it happens...

It is now confirmed it is a Russian registered ship the 'Elga 1' .Other sources suggest water leaked in via the propeller. The ship was loaded with coal heading to a Russian port. Sea conditions at the time were unremarkable. The ship was built in 1991.

The ship is laying in a shipping lane so will have to be salvaged, not to mention the hundreds of tonnes of coal on board.

Ironically this took place on St. Nicholas Day, the patron saint of sailors !.

St. Nicholas Day - 6th December in Bulgaria

It's St. Nicholas Day here in Bulgaria, he is one of their most revered saints and the name day for everyone called Nikolai or a derivative thereof, so I thought I would give you the background:

In the Republic of Bulgaria, Saint Nicholas is one of the most celebrated saints. Many churches and monasteries are named after him. Saint Nicholas' day is celebrated as a holiday on the 6th of December.Nikulden is "The Day of Saint Nicholas" - a great winter festival celebrated by all Bulgarians on December 6th. It is the name day for everyone named Nikola, Nikolay, Kolyo, Nikolina, Neno, Nenka, Nikolina or Nina.

Saint Nicholas is believed to help all the sailors and fishermen. He was born during the third century in Patara, a village situated is Turkey nowadays. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died during an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. Not only is he the patron of sailors and voyagers, but he is also a friend and protector of children. He is the master of the entire submarine realm - fish and water demons - as well as the sea winds. The autumn fishing season ends on this day. The day's catch is to be offered to the saint. Fishermen eat the first fish caught right on the shore, before bringing the rest home.

According to the folk-Christian myths, it is Saint Nicholas who makes the winds rage and cease. Saint Nicholas can walk on the seas and whenever there is a ship in trouble, he would save it. He is the protector of sailors and fishermen, a patron for those who bear his name, a personal or family protector. Like the Greek sailors, Bulgarians also keep icons of St. Nicholas on shipboard seeking protection from storms. Sailors' wives put icons of St. Nicholas into the sea, praying that he will bring their husbands safely back on shore. A special family lineage festival is arranged on Nikulden.

The traditional Nikulden meal in each household is based upon a fish meal - “ribnik” - a carp in dough - is traditional for the holiday. Carp is regarded as Nicholas' servant. There are also two special loaves of bread. The food is blessed at church or at home before being served. After wafting incense over the food, the host raises the bread high, and breaks it in half. He keeps one half while the other one is left on the table. It is on Saint Nicholas' Day that the table is open to all guests and is not cleared before the day is over. Relatives, sponsors and neighbours are invited, the table is sanctified and the feast day ends in songs and fun.

5.6 earthquake in Vrancea - Romania rocked northeastern Bulgaria Dobrich - News Dobrich | Dobrich Classifieds | Companies Dobrich:

As you can see the earthquake was felt in Bulgaria too.I enclose an article about the deadly 1977 earthquake from the same epicentre. As you can see this is nowhere near as bad:

1977 Vrancea earthquake

The 1977 Vrancea Earthquake occurred on Friday, 4 March 1977, 21:20 local time and was felt throughout the Balkans. It had a magnitude of 7.2 and its epicenter in Vrancea (in the Eastern Carpathians) at a depth of 94 kilometers.

The earthquake killed about 1,578 people, of which only 1,424 in Bucharest, and wounded more than 11,300.

Among the victims was the Romanian actor Toma Caragiu.

About 35,000 buildings were damaged, and the direct loss was estimated at more than two billion dollars. Most of the damage was concentrated in Romania's capital, Bucharest, where about 33 large buildings collapsed. Most of those buildings were built before World War II, and were not reinforced. Many of the historic buildings that collapsed were not rebuilt; instead, the land was cleared for the building of the Palace of the Parliament. After the earthquake, the Romanian government imposed tougher construction standards. (source Wikipedia)

Wake Up, Europe by George Soros | The New York Review of Books

Wake Up, Europe by George Soros | The New York Review of Books:

A brilliant article it should be compulsory reading for all interested in Eastern Europe.

Bulgarian Property Buying Guide

THE GO BG PROPERTY GUIDE

I have been asked by several people to produce a simple guide (I hesitate to say idiot proof) for those foreigners who may be interested in buying in Bulgaria.I have tried to produce a brief and yet informative outline of the purchase process.

1) Property Ownership: If you an EU citizen you can buy houses, apartments or land as an individual. The exception is agricultural land, which requires a company.

Non EU citizens must set up a company to buy property in Bulgaria.Company registration should normally be done via a lawyer the cost should minimal, and accounts should be filed every year (again at minimal cost)

2) Legal : For any kind of purchase you need a lawyer, simply relying on the Notary system can be a false economy. The Notary is a sort of state employed lawyer who signs off property and other legal transactions. It is not their job to represent you.The seller should supply the ownership document (Notary Act) for the property, a skitza (which is a sort of ordnance survey map of the property), and must swear there are no outstanding taxes/bills owed on the property.

Once you receive your ownership document you should go to the local Town Hall to register your ownership with them.Your property should be registered with the court by the Notary.

If you use GOBG we can recommend English speaking lawyers.

3) Cost : Total purchase taxes should be around 7% of the price on the Notary deed.

4) Bank Accounts: You will need a bank account in Bulgaria, but this simple. If you transfer money internationally the money transferred will be converted into the currency of your account. The law in Bulgaria used to be quite lax re cash purchases, but now bank transfers are pretty much compulsory.

5) Minimum deposits. You may want a preliminary contract and to complete in 28 days. You can place a 10% deposit to secure your purchase. However, with the absence of the need for a company for EU citizens, this may not be necessary.Usually the deposit acts to reserve the property until your company registration is complete.

7) Air Flights and accommodation: Wizz Air fly in to Varna throughout the year, and there are many charter flights from May to October.Throughout the year there are flights to Istanbul,Vienna and Moscow. There are numerous scheduled flights into Sofia from the UK; including Easyjet, the budget airline, which flies from Gatwick,Luton and Stansted, they also fly to Burgas. Internal flights may be obtained from Sofia to Varna or Burgas. Additionally there are numerous cheap flights from the Romanian capitol Bucharest, if you are heading to Northern Bulgaria.
Ryan Air fly to Plovdiv airport from Stansted.

Hotel accommodation is plentiful and cheap. However many hotels on the coast only open in the summer. If you wish GoBG to book you accommodation then we are more than happy to do so : e mail us at info@gobg.co.uk.

8) Charter Deals :For a seamless, and less stressful first/second visit, it may be an option to get a package for around £280, i.e. hotel and flight, as it may be cheaper. The main North Black Sea resorts are Albena and Golden Sands. In the South, Sunny Beach is the biggest.

9) Travelling about in Bulgaria : You can hire a taxi for a few hours to drive around for circa £25-35. The taxis are not metered, unless you request it, so it is best to negotiate a price before you hire them. Taxi ranks are in all resorts, but you may also want to use the same driver whilst you are there (if you find him cheap and reliable) and a daily/weekly rate can be negotiated. However we can also supply you with a taxi driver for whichever period you require at a competitive rate. Trains in Bulgaria are infrequent, slow and dirty, but cheap. Bus travel is recommended, these are modern, frequent and inexpensive. However there are almost never any toilets open on the buses. There are numerous car hire companies throughout Bulgaria, including international brands.

10)Building and Renovation: We realise that your property may need work done on it and provide a full building service from day to day repairs to new build.

11) Annual Property Taxes. These are small compared to other countries.Typically 40-50lv a year.Failure to pay incurs annual penalties.

12. Residency.EU residents and come and go to/from Bulgaria as they please; for all others there are visa free stays of 30/90 days depending on the nationality. For those wanting to reside here they should get a lichna karta (photo i.d card) from the police, as photo i.d. is compulsory for everyone here.

Contact us at info@gobg.co.uk. For further information, or for an informal chat Skype: darrin2433 .

Helping Those in Need in Bulgaria- A guest post from Bernadette Leggett

Hi as promised a guest post from Bernie from Silistra Orphanage Appeal and many other worthy causes !.

The Bulgarian Orphanage Appeal None profit Organization Hi we are Bernadette & Douglas Leggett, we are from Peterborough in the UK. We are just two ordinary people trying to make a difference to the lives of those children and young adults and elderly who are less fortunate than ourselves. We have for the past 7 years dedicated our time and skills to helping 21 organisations here all over Bulgaria. Now we mainly focus on Silistra as this is where we have a house. We set up a small none profit charitable organisation in the UK The Bulgarian Orphanage Appeal. The Dimcho Debelainov Orphanage will always be our main priority. We also have the Baby Orphanage, the Disability Day Centre, The home for the Elderly, the new SFTH Disability Centre for young children and adults, also Malek Preslavez orphanage and now our newest project is The Teenage Disability Centre in Glavinitiza

We bring donated items of clothing, shoes, toys, tools computers, machines, materials, toiletries Christmas shoe-boxes etc form the UK and one year from Belgium for the orphanages, disability centres hospital and home for the elderly in Silistra Malek Preslavetz orphanage as well as sending good to Plovdiv, Vidin, Dobrich, Karlovo and other areas. Our aim is to give these children/adults a better quality in life with the necessities and if possible a little more. Our latest project is The Teenage Disability Centre in Glavinitiza - We have visited this home and are appalled at the conditions they live in. This centre is in a very bad condition and is in need of a big refurbishment however, we cannot afford to do that ourselves therefore, we are asking help from the local Municipality and the community and anyone else that feel they can help us. We do NOT want MONEY, what we need please are donated items of materials to renovate the properties, or if you cannot help with them, than there are other items such as new beds, settees, dining room tables and chairs, fridges freezers, cookers curtains to rugs, toiletries, laminated flooring, paint, showers, toilets, hand basins basically anything you feel you as a company or an individual can donate, all items will be made good use of. Thank you in advance..

If we do manage to get the buildings repaired they will need monitoring and maintaining, perhaps your company can donate a contract for general upkeep checks etc. We are doing what we can to help. The youngsters living there have nothing or very little, they lack the necessities like toiletries, clothing, shoes, food and much more. We brought them a huge lorry load of goods from the UK and our sponsors Bon Marine Shipping Agency in Varna also send a truck load of goods including a pallet of food. The youngsters were over the moon and they all received something - Nasuf, Nasuf Governor of Silistra and Vjara Deputy Governor were very supportive to our cause - They found us storage to store our 40ft container load when it came to Bulgaria and also found sponsors Stefvano Ltd in Silistra to supply us with transporting the goods from storage to Glavinitza. As you can imagine this was indeed a great help to us as we are only too people struggling to do everything ourselves and also try to raise transport cost from UK to Bulgaria. This year we were very lucky our followers and supporters raised the transport costs for us.

Our cause is NOT about money, we fund raise all year to reach the transport costs from UK to Bulgaria - we are very lucky we have fantastic supporters in UK and Bulgaria Belgium and Italy. We have sponsors here in Bulgaria too Nominal Accounting Ltd in Burgas, Bon Marine Shipping in Varna, NZT Transport in Sofia, SewAge Solution in Sofia, Pescott's Foods in Yambol and Pelican Guesthouse Serberna and lots of wonderful Ex pats who rally round when we need help. We hold an Annual Garden Party at the Dimcho Silistra to raise funds to go towards items needed. Over the years, we have bought 40 new bunk beds, 46 bikes, swimming pool, marquee, trainers and more. The funds raised last year will go towards a holiday for the children in August this year...

These are the conditions the youngsters live in at Gavinitisa so as you can see, we are in great need of help with this project. These youngsters are based out of the town away from everyone and everything. They needs so much it is very hard to know where to start, the main priority is to ensure they have sufficient food and the buildings are habitable - The shower rooms and toilets are disgraceful as is the kitchen/dining room and broken furniture. They make the best of what they have by adding paint here and there for colour. You can see many photos on the Facebook below as well as on our website.

You can contact us direct on our website or Facebook below or tel no 0888 487394 or contact the Mayor of Glavinitza or Vyara Deputy Governor of Silistra.  Please feel free to browse the website and the Facebook. Thank you so much for your support, with your help we can all ensure these youngsters have a safe and more comfortable home.
