The latest on the train disaster, not far from Dobrich in North-East Bulgaria, is that 8 are dead, over 20 injured, many with burns. The compensation for those who have lost their homes (or are very damaged) is just €162.50, which is pathetic .

In Bulgaria, Saint Nicholas' day is celebrated on the 6 December as Nikulden. Families invite relatives, sponsors and neighbours for a meal of fish (usually ribnik, a carp wrapped in dough) and two loaves of ceremonial bread, all of which are blessed at church or at home. This morning I put up a post on this blog that the pound was worth 2.85lv.I double checked later on, and the same site that I looked at earlier was changed to 2.32lv, so I took the original post down. I have now checked half a dozen current sites and the rates are anything from 2.32 to 2.78. This just cannot be correct.Someone could make quite a killing if they could get 2.78.I am very confused !.
