The Ukrainian Crisis and Bulgaria

I have posted a lot in the past few days about the developing crisis in the Ukraine. Commentators better than I have written much ; but I want to look at the Bulgarian perspective.

Bulgaria is at the West End of the Black Sea, it is circa 900 km from the Ukraine, but there is a Bulgarian minority in South West Ukraine. The majority of conflict would be in the South and East of the country. However, it would severely affect air travel, and certainly shipping in the Black Sea.This will involve severe economic disruption.Russia controls vast fuel resources and that is its master card. That is why the West is like a deer in the car lights at the minute.

Once the soldiers start moving they can go anywhere.

However refugees have to go somewhere, and it is likely that Romania and Bulgaria will bear the brunt. So there will be Syrian and then Bulgarian refugees in Europe's  poorest EU member. The country cannot afford it, but, in a war poverty is no excuse.Let us hope that the Russians ((in the main) will see sense, that a Russian imperial revanchism will not take place.

Ukraine is a country, but of contradictions, it does not deserve to be carved up like a piece of meat.
