Balchik News:Beautiful Balchik, Bulgaria - Part 1

Balchik News

This is the first in a regular series of articles related to the historic harbour town of Balchik.

The town itself dates back into antiquity and was originally known as Dionysius, after the Greek God of Food and Wine.Still, to this day you can see the ruins of the Temple of Kibella (Sybil) and several other examples of Greco-Roman history here.

For our picture today we feature Nymphaeum or Water Temple: the fake Greco-Roman ornamental pool in the former Romanian Summer Palace:

A water feature from the Palace

A place of peace and tranquillity, overlooking the Black Sea, the Palace complex attracts thousands of visitors every year. For more information about Balchik please email info@gobg.co.uk

Balchik News:Beautiful Balchik, Bulgaria - Part 7

As part of our occasional series showcasing Balchik, Bulgaria; here is a nice example of the inter-war architecture of the town. This building is located in Old Balchik, on the way up to the Town Hall.

This building, as with most of the older parts of the town, dates from the period when Balchik and the South Dobrudja region, in general, was under Romanian rule (1919-1940). Balchik became the administrative centre for the area.

A traditional turn of century building in Balchik

Balchik, of course, has changed rapidly, particularly since the 21st Century, when a lot of new investment has taken place, not only many new hotels, but also renovated buildings such as the Port Building which was completed in July 2015, and will provide for a Museum of the Sea and 300 seat restaurant.

Beautiful Balchik, Bulgaria - Part 3

Waterfall in the Palace

Here is the Waterfall within the Palace complex. The Palace and its gardens were designed by the Russian Tsars designers.

Some of the best in Europe.

Everything in the complex was started in 1926 and completed in 1937.

Remember that this part of Bulgaria was awarded to Romania in 1919 as a reward for their part on the Allied side.

(Queen Marie of Romania was instrumental in bringing Romania on to the war).

In 1940 Hitler gave the region back to Bulgaria as a reward for its pro-Axis stance.

Queen Marie's heart was buried in the Palace and was removed back to Bran Castle in Romania.

The Palace remains the centrepiece of the tourist industry in Balchik, and is popular with a variety of nationalities, but especially Romanians.

Beautiful Balchik, Bulgaria - Part 5

The Palace and Beach

Balchik is located 45km North of Varna.A bright, historic place.

Here are two views of the main Palace building. In fact, the Palace is really a complex of several buildings, including a chapel. As you can see the tower looks a little bit like a minaret, and the architectural styles are a blend of East and West.

On a more personal note, the story goes that Queen Marie used the palace for liaisons with a Turkish lover.

That, of course, is history, but the Palace is an enduring tribute to her love of Balchik, and is her legacy.
